Reporters Without Borders – an international group promoting media freedom condemned Tuesday’s killing of a Sri Lankan Tamil journalist.
Subramaniyam Sugirdharajan, working for the Tamil-language daily Sudar Oli, was gunned down in Trincomalee after covering abuses of Tamil paramilitary groups in the area.
“We are horrified by the level of violence against Tamil journalists and perpetrators of these murders encourage more violence against the press,” Reporters without Borders (RSF) said in a statement on Wednesday.
In an article Sugirdharajan wrote on Monday, he detailed abuses supposedly committed by Tamil paramilitary groups, including the January 2 shooting of five students in Trincomalee.
RSF said, The Sudar Oli, seen as a pro-LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) paper, was threatened several times last year with an employee detained by police on suspicion of being an LTTE spy.
