According to sources four senior ministers are tipped to be in the running for the top post. The final decision, however, rests with the President who will consult the Prime Minister before making an announcement. First on the list is Tilak Marapana, minister of development assignments.

His appointment, it is learnt, will be marred by Marapana's resignation in 2015 as a minister over the Avant Garde statement in Parliament. Plantation Industries Minister Navin Dissnayake and Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe are said to be also on the list. Some political analysts say that former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is also being considered.
