War crimes: US, four others agree on local probe

Feb 20, 2015 (LBO) – Five countries, including the United States have agreed that Sri Lanka could conduct a local investigation over the alleged war crimes during the war, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senarathne said at the Cabinet media briefing yesterday. However, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein stressed that the deferral of the report was for one time only, and the request for deferral was granted by the Council on Monday afternoon (16).

Senarathne also said that that US Secretary of State John Kerry was expected to visit Sri Lanka this year.

Earlier this week the United Nations said that it would delay the report of alleged human rights violations in during the war in Sri Lanka until September 2015, given the ˜changing political context’ in the island.
