A policeman and a civilian were shot dead in two separate incidents in Sri Lanka's restive eastern province, the military said Wednesday. Unidentified gunmen shot dead a policeman guarding a warehouse holding tsunami relief aid in the town of Kalmunai and escaped with his weapon, military spokesman Daya Ratnayake said.
He said the motive for the pre-dawn attack was not clear but the attackers had also taken a gun from another constable who escaped unhurt.
Separately, suspected Tiger rebels shot dead a civilian overnight in the Batticaloa district, also in the eastern province, Ratnayake said.
There had been a spate of killings in the region where a former Tiger rebel leader led an unprecedented split in March last year.
Since then, the main guerrilla outfit has been trying to regain control over the region, leading to internecine clashes.
