Sri Lanka’s US $85mn airport runway contract awarded to Access Engineering annulled: Minister

Mar 19, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Bandaranayake International Airport runway overlay and related work tender that was awarded to Access Engineering, a local construction company has been annulled by cabinet due to lack of transparency, cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said today.

“No proper procurement procedure has been followed when awarding this contract,” Senarathne said. “The Minister (Arjuna) says they (Access Engineering) have no experience.” Senaratne also said it has been confirmed that the award of this contract was made without following a competitive tender procedure and without transparency. The proposal to annul was made by Minister Arjuna Ranatunge, the subject minister.

The contract valued at about 85 million US dollars was awarded to Access Engineering during the rule of the previous regime.
