Sri Lanka’s tourism sector profits should trickle down to people: Minister

Apr 24, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister told LBO that the profits from Island’s tourism sector should go to the hands of the common people.

Tourism Industry is highly depend on manpower which requires skilled and unskilled labour.

“Looking into the future, tourism is a sector that is developing at a rapid pace and our aim is to ensure that all the profits would trickle down to the people,” Navin Dissanayake, Minister of Tourism and Sports told LBO at the inauguration of the Sancharaka Udawa 2015 held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Center (BMICH), Friday. According data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority 112,550 persons were directly employed in the tourism sector in 2013 with over 90,000 persons employed in the hotels and restaurants, 5,862 in the airline industry, 7,011 employed as travel agents and tour operators. Sancharaka Udawa or 'tourism dawn' kicked off on April 24th with more than 200 stalls, and is organized by the Sri Lanka Association Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) together with Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.

Participants include boutique hotels, guest houses, villas, bungalows, heritage properties, restaurants at mid-way points, home stays as well as tourism service providers.
 Sri Lanka exceeded its target of 1.5 million tourist arrivals last year and earned 2.2 billion US dollars from tourism.
