Over 600,000 pensioners in the country are expected to benefit from the Digital Identity Card in their banking transactions, the banks said.
Sampath Bank is expecting to issue the cards in the near future through its branches.
Depending on the requirement, biometric details of pensioners also can be included in the card and the department would also add WNOP details, medical history which can be used in emergencies such as obtaining medical treatments.
The bank plans to provide the Department of Pensions with 25 computers, as a measure to further streamline the pension payment and to facilitate direct coordination with the department.
Sri Lanka has about 521,699 pensioners in 2013 data showed. Highest number of pensioners has been recorded from Colombo district who accounts for 16.45 percent from the total whi
