Apr 15, 2015 (LBO) –Sri Lanka’s first open air national zoological garden adjacent to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is ready to open on Friday, April 17, Minister of Tourism and Sports Navin Dissanayake declared today.

Sri Lanka has invested approximately 862 million rupees to build the zoo which 488 million rupees were funded from the Treasury and the rest from the Zoological Development Fund, a statement said. However, it has taken about 17 years to complete the construction of the zoo which commenced in the year 1998. The open air zoo which to be open soon, consists two zonal areas, Sri Lankan Zone and World Zone.

The Sri Lankan Zone is allocated for local animals and is home to rich variety of wildlife species including, leopards and different species of native animal and birds. In line with the modern Zoo concepts, the Pinnawala open air zoo has been designed and established in 44 acres, to provide open range zoo experience to the visitors with free living space for animals. Sri Lanka Tourism Ministry plans to promote tourism industry though the newest zoo addition, as Pinnawala known for one of the major tourists’ attraction point to the Island.

Animals such as leopards, bears, deer and crocodiles will be conserved and an opportunity is afforded to observe their movements.
