Sri Lanka will not have electricity tariff revisions in 2015: Minister

May 12, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Minister of Power and Energy says that there are no plans to increase the electricity tariffs this year.

“We are not planning to increase the electricity tariffs during the course of this year,” Minister, Power and Energy, Patali Champika Ranawaka said. “This is because the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) are both at a very stable financial position now,” “So no matter what statements are made by anybody I can assure that the electricity tariff will remain unchanged.” However, the state-owned power utility recorded a loss in 2014 as drought in the early part of the year forced it to rely more on high cost fuel oil electricity generation. According to provisional financial data, the CEB’s operating loss in 2014 was 11.

We were under the impression with completing of all the three stages of the so called very low cost COAL project even though it pollutes much. It is practically now supposed to be taking more than 50% of the total energy on the daily basis and it was said the cost of fuel is less than Rs10/kWh Why can we not have a drastic reduction in Tariff for 2015? The Transmission and Distribution losses have also much reduced. Liquid fuel prices have been reduced and many of the costly private Power generation stopped. It is time Treasury pays CEB for the reimbursement of the low consumption low income group consumption which is sold at a very much subsidized price. If this is achieved the Tariff can be definitely further reduced without making any loss to CEB.
