Sri Lanka vehicle registrations down in Aug 2020

Sep 17, 2020 (LBO) - Total vehicle registrations significantly came down in August to 17,493 units down from 28,572 the previous month with slow downs shown across the board, a new report said.

Data compiled by JB Securities equities research shows  brand new car registrations recorded 248 units in Aug down from 272 units in July and 361 units 12 months ago. Zotye recorded 67 units followed by Maruti/Suzuki with 58 units. Small cars recorded 180 units followed by Mid-size cars recording 65 units. Financing share was 37.1% lower than the normal monthly average of 50%.


JB Securities expect registrations to further slowdown in September due to inventory depletions.

The import bans are not applicable to agriculture, service and construction related vehicles which explains a slightly different trend in these categories.Total car registrations recorded 906 units in Aug down from 1,712 units in July and 2,385 units 12 months ago.

Pre-owned car registrations recorded 658 units in Aug down from 1,440 units in July and significantly down from 2,024 units 12 months ago. Small cars accounted for 80.2% of volumes followed by medium cars accounting for 19.1%. Toyota recorded 352 units followed by Suzuki with 128 units. Financing share was 47.9% in line with the normal monthly average.

Premium motor cars recorded 77 units in Aug down from 106 units the previous month and 103 units 12 months ago.

SUV registrations recorded 511 units in Aug down from 756 units the previous month and 653 units 12 months ago. Brand new recorded 209 units, the balance 302 units were pre-owned. Crossovers (<1,000 cc) accounted for the bulk of units recording 471 units. Toyota was the market leader recording 235 units – Raize an entry level crossover accounted for 137 units followed by C-HR with 70 units. Financing share was 47.6% in line with the normal monthly average.

Hybrids recorded 136 units in Aug down from 163 units in July and significantly down from 496 units 12 months ago. Motor cars recorded 113 units followed by SUVs with 21 units.

Vans recorded 454 units in Aug down from 705 units in July and significantly down from 720 units 12 months ago.  Preowned vehicles accounted for the majority recording 452 units and Mini vans accounted for 376 units, the balance 78 units were mid-size vans. Suzuki was dominant claiming a 44.7% share. Financing share was 64.1%.

3-wheelers recorded 206 units in Aug down from 635 units in July and 1,039 units 12 months ago. Financing share was 67%.

2-wheelers recorded 13,794 units in Aug down significantly from 22,419 units in July and 25,508 units 12 months ago. Scooters recorded 8,277 units in Aug down from 15,047 units the previous month indicative of inventory depletions. Honda had a brand share of 46.4% followed by TVS with 30.2%. Motor bikes recorded 5,501 units in Aug down from 7,358 units the previous month – Yamaha was the brand leader with a 22.8% share closely followed by TVS with a 21.9% share and Bajaj with a 20.8% share. Electric bikes were a mere 22 units. Financing share was 61.9% lower than the normal monthly average of 70%.

Pickup trucks recorded 129 units in Aug down from 140 units in July but up from 79 units 12 months ago. Brand new accounted for 104 units, the balance 25 units were preowned. Toyota Hilux recorded 100 units. Financing share was 45%.

Mini trucks recorded 11 units in Aug down from 21 units the previous month and significantly down from 110 units 12 months ago. Financing  share was 72.7%.

Light trucks recorded 87 units in Aug down from 212 units in July and 169 units 12 months ago. Brand new recorded 56 units, the balance 31 units were preowned. Mahindra accounted for the bulk of units recording 43. Financing share was 75.9%.

Medium trucks recorded 201 units in Aug down from 314 units in July but up from 186 units 12 months ago. Brand new units recorded 90 units, the balance 111 units were preowned. Isuzu is the category leader claiming a 61.7% share. Financing share was 82.6% in line with the normal monthly average.

Heavy trucks recorded 101 units in Aug down from 132 units in July and 124 units 12 months ago. Brand new units were 98, the balance 3 were preowned. Tippers were 11 units. Ashok Leyland was the category leader claiming a 49% share.

Buses recorded 33 units in Aug down from 41 units in July and 73 units 12 months ago. Brand new were 19 units, the balance 14 were preowned. Financing share was 72.7%.

Hand tractors recorded 137 units in Aug significantly down from 266 units in July but up from 134 units 12 months ago. Financing share was 45.3%.

Large tractors recorded 428 units in Aug up from 393 units in July and significantly up from 183 units 12 months ago. Tafe is the category leader with a 40% share followed by Mahindra with a 25% share. Financing share was 80%.
