Palitha Mahipala, Health Services Director General was quoted as saying in a statement.
Mahipala also pointed out that the public can reach the Food Unit of the Health and Indigenous Medicine Ministry on 0112368813 to complain about unhygienic food.
“Once a complaint is made the Public Health Inspector and the Medical Officer of Health will be sent to conduct instant raids to detect such food outlets.”
Mahipala requested the public to purchase fruits rather than artificial sweets and sugar added food items such as cakes when buying gifts for friends and relatives during the festive season.
This is a welcoming step leading to prevent colossal amount of money waste in medicine for diabetic patients. I suggest the authority should extent this practice for all kind of foods including but not limit to farmed vegetables, fruits and process foods. Accordingly consumers will be aware of the risk or trouble they going to get into. Sri Lanka must develop unique business models for the recognition of healthy foods considering our economic conditions rather than trying to follow costly methods adopt by develop country.
