Southern Expressway extension to commence next month

June 24, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will commence the extension work of the Southern Expressway early next month, Highways Minister said.









“It'll be inaugurated by the President on the 04 July 2015,” Highways Minister Kabir Hashim said. “Then within the next two weeks we'll be calling bids to construct the Colombo – Kandy highway and also will expedite the process with regard to the Colombo – Ratnapura highway.









” The Minsiter said that this will be apart from the commencement of the pending rural road development projects in the country. “Our plan is to carry out all this work in a very transparent and structured manner with the support of the treasury.









” “We now have a proper and effective plan in place to do the necessary road development and the treasury is releasing tranches of the required funds,” “Especially we will be paying attention to the rural road development and have already allocated 30 million rupees for every electorate,” “In addition to this we will also go ahead with the agreements that were signed by the previous regime even though there were issues with some of them but we have minimized the cost in these projects.”
