Nov 05, 2018 (LBO) – Speaker Karu Jayasuriya says that until the parliament is reconvened he has no option but to recognize the composition of the last parliament as legitimate.
Slamming the President for his recent conduct, Speaker further says that he recognizes the previous government as the legitimate government unless proven otherwise by a Parliamentary majority.
"As the majority of Parliament has requested that the status that existed before these changes were made shall be accepted, I wish to emphasize that I am compelled to accept the status that existed previously until such time that they and the new political alliance prove their majority in Parliament," he said.
President Maithripala Sirisena has now decided to reconvene the Parliament on November 14. Speaker, however, criticizes the President for breaking the commitment made to him to convene the Parliament on November 07.

"If I am to follow the verbal assurance given by the President, it is my duty as Speaker to summon Parliament by 7th November and restore stability in the country. I consider it as the duty of the President too to extend his support to me towards this end."
