Sri Lanka, IMF Discuss EFF Progress, US Tariff Impact

A meeting between President Anura Kumara Disanayake and an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation concluded successfully today, April 7, 2025, at the Presidential Secretariat. The discussions centered on the preliminary review of the fourth tranche of Sri Lanka's Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement.

The primary focus involved assessing Sri Lanka's progress under the IMF-supported program and outlining the necessary steps to achieve future economic targets.

A significant portion of the conversation addressed emerging economic challenges, specifically the potential impact of newly proposed trade tariffs by the United States on Sri Lanka's economy. Both parties engaged in a detailed exchange of views on mitigating possible adverse effects.

The IMF delegation, led by Mr. Sanjaya Panth, Deputy Director for the Asia and Pacific Department, included senior mission chiefs Mr. Peter Breuer and Mr. Evan Papageorgiou.

Representing the Sri Lankan government were key economic officials, including Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando, Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning, Harshana Suriyapperuma, Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Senior Economic Advisor to the President Duminda Hulangamuwa, and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Mahinda Siriwardena.
