Sri Lanka’s ruling party says it is lining up political support behind Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the common national candidate for Presidential polls. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), says over eight minor political parties have already agreed to back Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, at the coming Presidential election.

“Eight political parties inside the Alliance (UPFA) have already accepted Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as their candidate at the election. A few more parties outside, have also agreed,” media spokesman, Mangala Samaraweera told journalists on Wednesday.
The SLFP is now talking to the Marxist JVP and the Buddhist clergy party, the JHU, for their backing for Rajapaksa as well.
“We believe the SLFP candidate will have support from a majority of political parties,” said Samaraweera.
Rajapaksa is positioned as the “only Sri Lankan candidate.”
“The other contestant represents foreign forces and the small corporate mafia that supports him.
