May 15, 2022 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's twittersphere has seen a surge in activity due to the recent political and economic crises. Events reached a crescendo as violent rioting transitioned into the the surprising outcome of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe being sworn in for the 6th time.
Perhaps the most significant presence on Twitter in Sri Lanka is that of Dr. Harsha de Silva, a prominent economist and opposition legislator. In a countless barrage of twitter polls and exchanges it appears evident that Dr. de Silva (57) is the legislator whom the twitter class desires to take up the most important job in the new government (Finance Minister) and help turn around Sri Lanka's economy.
Although Mr. de Silva has given multiple statements that he wishes to toe his SJB party line and not take up the position, the clamour continues unabated.
De Silva is possibly the most popular legislator in his party, and him joining the government would significantly strenghten the hands of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. The two have worked closely together the last time Wickremesinghe held the office of Prime Minister from 2015-2019.
