December 11, 2006 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's powerful treasury secretary P B Jayasundara, has sent in his resignation, the state-run Daily News reported Monday.

The newspaper did not give a reason, but said Jayasundara will cease from running the day-to-day affairs of the finance ministry from December 31.

Jayasundara is due to take up a post with President Mahinda Rajapakse's office from January 1, the government paper said. Initially Jayasundera's office said he was not commenting on the report.

But the privately owned Daily Mirror on Tuesday quoted Jayasundera as saying he would continue in office, but had only indicated to President Mahinda Rajapakse that he would like to be relieved of his duties at a later date.

Presidnet Rajapakse, is also the island's defence and finance minister.
