rnrnStarting his career as a Junior Clerk in 1925 at the District Road Committee in Hambantota, he later moved on to become the Controller of Exchange in 1948. Two years later he was promoted as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank.
rnrnHe holds the distinction of being the first Sri Lankan Central Bank Governor to take up office in 1953 at the age of 45.
rnrnLeaving the Central Bank he branched out into numerous enterprises including Mercantile Credit, shipping, financial services.
rnrnIn 1997 he founded Sampath Bank, which pioneered the use of IT. He later went on to start National Enterprise Bank, which is now known as MERC Bank. His grandson Milinda Moragoda is presently the Minister for Economic Reform.rn
