Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka by providing emergency relief items to assist those affected by recent floods and landslides. This gesture underscores Japan’s long-standing partnership with Sri Lanka. In a symbolic handover ceremony held at Bandaranaike International Airport on December 7, 2024, His Excellency Isomata Akio, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and Mr. Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Office, officially presented the relief items to Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyaconthe (Rtd), the Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and Major General Udaya Herath (Retd), Director General of the Disaster Management Centre.
The shipment includes essential supplies such as tents, sleeping pads, and tarpaulins, which will be distributed across 13 districts severely impacted by heavy rains. This timely assistance aims to provide shelter and relief to the affected communities.
JICA’s ongoing support highlights the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and serves as a reminder of the solidarity and cooperation shared during times of adversity, while celebrating the 70th anniversary of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA).
