On 29 April 2018, the Government of Japan announced the conferment of “The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” upon Professor Carlo Fonseka, in recognition of his significant contribution to the promotion of Japanese culture in Sri Lanka.
His Excellency Mr. Taro KONO, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sent a congratulatory message upon the announcement on 29th April, stating “Please accept my sincerest congratulations on the conferment of ‘The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon’, in recognition of your outstanding contribution, and my best wishes for your continued good health and happiness”
Professor Carlo Fonseka, one of the most famous clinical doctors in Sri Lanka was appointed as Co- Chairperson of the Committee of the Japan Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Fund Awards in 2010. His leadership and contribution to the Committee has enabled the Cultural Fund Awards maintain and develop its reputation as a distinguished cultural award in Sri Lanka, while adapting to new and changing cultural environment.
The Japan Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Fund Awards (Bunka Award), established in 1993, is one of the most prestigious awards in Sri Lanka, and aims to encourage and promote mid- career Sri Lankan artists with remarkable talents.
