India-SL Partnership to Drive Digital Transformation: Strategic & Timely Move – Colombo Chamber of Commerce

Saranga Wijeyarathne, President- Colombo Chamber of Commerce

The Colombo Chamber of Commerce commends President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent official visit to India, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations and introducing innovative approaches to advance Sri Lanka’s economic and social development.

India, as Sri Lanka's largest trading partner and a key player in the regional geopolitical landscape, was a fitting choice for President Dissanayake’s first foreign visit. The Chamber recognizes this as a timely and strategic decision, emphasizing India’s pivotal role in supporting Sri Lanka’s future growth.

During bilateral discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, India reaffirmed its commitment to actively participate in Sri Lanka's development progress. This assurance marks a critical milestone in Sri Lanka's efforts to achieve its economic targets.

A key highlight of the visit was India's pledge to support Sri Lanka in building a digital economy—a transformative step toward national progress. The Colombo Chamber of Commerce views this commitment as a significant opportunity for Sri Lanka to emulate India's successful digital economic model, which has enabled even small-scale enterprises to transition to digital financial platforms. This achievement, despite India’s large population, offers valuable insights for Sri Lanka’s own digital transformation journey.

To further this goal, both nations agreed to establish a joint task force to develop the required digital public infrastructure. The Colombo Chamber considers this agreement a major outcome of the visit and a critical enabler for Sri Lanka’s digital economy ambitions.

Further, the Chamber welcomes India's support in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and social protection, recognizing these investments as essential to driving sustainable growth across Sri Lanka.

Another vital topic of discussion was the Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Chamber believes the renewed dialogue on the FTA will create avenues for enhanced trade opportunities and mutual benefits, further strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Colombo Chamber of Commerce remains optimistic that this visit has set the stage for a new era of economic collaboration, innovation, and growth, solidifying Sri Lanka’s position in the evolving regional economy.
