HIP Witnesses Shift in Cruise Ship Origins with European Vessels Leading as Indian Arrivals Decline in 2024

Hambantota International Port (HIP) saw a modest increase in cruise ship arrivals in 2024, with a notable shift in the origins of the vessels. There was a decline in ships from the Indian subcontinent, while arrivals from Europe rose significantly. Of the 23 cruise ships that docked at HIP, only six were from India, while 17 came from Europe.

The diversity and reach of the port's growing reputation were highlighted by the last three cruise liners to call at HIP in 2024. Mv. Azamara Pursuit, part of the Azamara Cruise Line fleet from Miami, Florida, made its inaugural visit in early December. Although it was the first time for Azamara Pursuit, the port had previously welcomed its sister ships: Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey in May and November 2023, respectively, and Azamara Onward in April. After its stay at HIP, Azamara Pursuit departed for Phuket. Azamara Line's local agent, Prudential Shipping, played a key role in facilitating 10 cruise liner calls to the port this year.

The other two liners closing out the year were Mv. Celebrity Millennium, also managed by Prudential Shipping, and Mv. Silver Whisper, represented by Colombo Shipping. Both berthed at HIP on December 13th before departing for their next destinations, concluding a busy and successful cruise season for 2024.

Commenting on the year's performance, Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group, stated, “The cruise industry's evolving dynamics reflect a renewed interest in diverse and unique destinations like HIP. In 2024, we saw a strong trend of European vessels exploring South Asia, highlighting the growing demand for culturally rich and off-the-beaten-path destinations. We expect this momentum to continue in 2025, with an increase in arrivals from Europe and a resurgence from the Indian subcontinent. This aligns with broader industry trends indicating a robust recovery in cruise tourism, driven by pent-up demand and increased consumer confidence.”

Looking ahead, HIP is poised for greater success in 2025, with more cruise liners expected to visit. The port's strategic focus on enhancing its facilities, streamlining operations, and fostering strong partnerships with shipping agents positions it as a key player in the region's cruise tourism landscape. As the global cruise industry continues to rebound and evolve, Hambantota International Port aims to solidify its reputation as a premier destination for luxury liners, offering unparalleled service and unique experiences for travelers worldwide.
