Mobile operator Celltel Lanka is luring its pre-paid customers with steep discounts to call selected overseas destinations. Starting July 25, Celltel users will be charged Rs. 11 (peak) and Rs. 8 (off peak) on foreign outgoing calls.
The tariffs are on par with local outgoing calls originating from Celltel's pre-paid card segment, its Chief Executive Dumindra Ratnayake said.
The first phase will allow discount calls to the USA, Canada, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Argentina, Macau, San Marino, Alaska and Puerto Rico.
With a subscriber base of around 800,000, pre-paid cards currently account for about 90 percent of Sri Lanka's pioneering mobile operator's customer base.
CellCARD (Celltel's pre-paid brand) pioneered the pre-paid card market, but lost out to Dialog KIT in 1999. However, Celltel is still aggressive with its mass marketing distribution channel.
