Sri Lanka has given China Merchants Holdings (International) Company Limited and China Merchants Hua Jian Highway Investment Company Limited to design, build, finance and operate and maintain the expressway.

China Merchants group has been given the first phase of Sri Lanka's Northern Expressway project running from the capital Colombo to the north of the island via central Sri Lanka.

President Rajapaksa had met China Merchants group Li Jianhong on August shortly after the group commissioned a 600 million US dollar container terminal and Colombo port that can handle the largest container ships in service.

China Merchants grip is now conducting a feasibility study and preparing technical and financial reports, his office said.

On the northern expressway project, CMG is now carrying out the feasibility study as well as the preparation of the technical and financial reports, the statement quoted Li as saying.
