Sept 28, 2010 (LBO) - The Sri Lanka Ports Authority which runs the island's ports expects to be able to handle payments by port users online by January next year, an official said.

It will eliminate the need for port users to visit the harbour to make payments, he said. Both its internal finance division as well as external payments are being computerised to speed up transactions and cargo movements, he said.

"By January 2011 we should be able to give an online facility where customers can pay and send documents to us online," the official said.

"The system will also communicate with the customs 'Asycuda' electronic payment system."

He said the electronic payments system will help to reduce delays in cargo movements and meet long-standing requests from shippers for 'e-commerce' facilities.
