Jul 12, 2020 (LBO) – The Chairman of Sri Lanka's Constitutional Council (CC), former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya urges the government to gazette the guidelines proposed by the Director General of Health for conducting an election under a controlled corona situation.
Releasing a statement, Jayasuriya emphasized that public officials and law enforcement officers have no power to ensure that the said guidelines are followed and implemented.
"I expect the Director-General of Health services would issue a gazette notification giving legal validity to the health guidelines for the General Election," Jayasuriya said.
"I humbly request the relevant officials and political leadership to provide legal protection to the health guidelines so that the people will be saved from the threat of an outbreak of the pandemic."
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has postponed all major election rallies scheduled for the 13th, 14th, and 15th of July.
The alliance further requests all their candidates to limit their election gatherings and pocket meetings as well.
