Cellular operator Celltel Lanka’s mobile service in Colombo was fully restored by late Wednesday afternoon after a software glitch knocked off part of its service to the city. Part of Celltel’s Colombo coverage was cut off when a scheduled software upgrade to one of its base station controllers (BSC) that links base stations with each other, faced technical problems.
The software upgrade was scheduled for completion by 3:00 am on Wednesday.
“The situation is under control and the service had been fully restored,” Celltel’s Chief Financial Officer Riyaz Rasheed told Lanka Business Online.
Rasheed said the upgrade was part of the cellular operator’s island wide coverage expansion and would also add capacity to its current network.
The problem BSC connected some 25 base stations in Colombo, which caused the partial breakdown in its service to the city in the morning, Rasheed said.
