The number of men and women moving to richer countries in search of better paying jobs, will increase further over the next 20 years. A World Bank report says aging labour forces in Europe, Japan and the US will pull in large chunks of working age men and women from developing countries.

Developing countries are forecast to add nearly 1 billion workers to the global labour market by 2025 when as much as 20 million people in high-income countries hit retirement age.

In Japan, the age group that supplies the bulk of the labour force – 15 to 65 years old – is already shrinking, while Europe will reach its peak in 2007–08.

In the other high-income countries, the peak will occur later—around 2020 for the United States and 2015 for the rest.

At the moment every 100 European workers support 36 elderly people; by 2025 they will have to support 52.

In Japan 100 workers will support 60 elderly in 2025.
