Bandwidth Battle

Jan 02, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has increased bandwidth speeds and data volumes for broadband customers and reduced charges from January 01, 2011, a statement said. "All our volume based broadband packages are free of bandwidth control and contention."

Editor's note - a spokesman for SLT has clarified that this announcement is all about volume based (limited data) packages and all existing unlimited packages will remain as they are with better quality. The firm, a former government monopoly which is now the dominant fixed line operator, said there will be an automatic 100 percent bandwidth upgrade for its existing ˜Entrée’ broadband customers who will now enjoy speeds up to 1Mbps.

Customers will also get a significant increase of included data for all volume-based broadband packages.

"Customers who are using the ˜Entrée’ (512kbps) Broadband Package will now experience downlink speeds doubled up to 1Mbps with this automatic bandwidth upgrade, and will enjoy an additional 500MB that amounts to 1.5GB of total data volume every month with no additional monthly charge."
