110 increase. Laugfs Gas is seeking legal advice to raise prices on a cylinder of LPG, despite the consumer watchdog shooting down its request for a Rs. 110 increase.
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said on Wednesday that the increase was rejected on the grounds that it was ‘not reasonable’, and no alternate increase was suggested.
“At a meeting on Tuesday we decided not to grant the increase to Laugfs on the grounds that the price application was not reasonable,” Chairman of the CAA, Dr.
M. Mushin said.
Laugfs however hopes to win on a loophole. “Under section 18 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, the CAA is bound to respond to our application within 30 days. In the event the CAA fails to respond, the applicant can revise the price notwithstanding,” Chairman of Laugfs, W.K Wegapitiya said.
With the CAA directive coming on Wednesday, three days after the May 01 deadline, Wegapitiya claims they have a legal case to jack up rates on a Rs. 785 cylinder.
