Aug 21, 2012 (LBO) – Japan's special envoy to Sri Lanka Yasushi Akashi will arrive in the Island Tuesday on a five day visit to assess post war developments, the Japanese embassy in Colombo said. Sri Lanka faces a periodic review at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva this November where the island's human rights record and good governance will be evaluated. Akashi is to meet government officials, representatives of opposition parties and civil society groups to 'emphasize the importance of national reconciliation towards establishment of lasting peace and national reconciliation, the embassy said.
It will be his 22nd visit to the island since 2002.
In July 2012, Sri Lanka announced a national action plan with time frames and performance assessment tools to implement proposals of a post war commission that delved in to the island's 30-year civil war.
