“Adopting advanced port technology and automation are some of the latest solutions planned by the Port of Colombo to increase productivity and efficiency in global port operations,” said Mr. Keith D. Mr. Bernard shared these insights at the keynote address at a special seminar on the “Impact of Port Congestion, Space Restrictions & Equipment Shortages on Supply Chains,” organized by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) Sri Lanka Branch. The event took place on August 27, 2024, at the Olympic House in Colombo.

The Port of Colombo with its latest additions, is planning to implement several advanced solutions to improve its operations and logistics operations in the maritime industry. These include state-of-the-art smart terminals, Advanced Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), the Port Community System (PCS), the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) / Navigation Vessel Registration System, the Megaport Radiation Detecting System / Port Access Control System, the latest ERP systems, and Green Port initiatives.

“The Port of Colombo was recognized as the best-performing port globally for the first quarter of this year, with an impressive growth rate of 23.6%,” Mr. Bernard emphasized.

He also highlighted the port’s preparedness to handle distress vessels in its waters with its recent experiences and technological expertise, as well as its ability to manage unexpected increases in cargo volume caused by regional disruptions.

“Through strategic infrastructure improvements, effective crisis management, and adaptive responses to global trends, the port continues to play a crucial role in supporting both national and international supply chains,” Mr. Bernard said.
