On Thursday the International Labour Organisation (ILO) wrapped up its annual world conference with all member countries, including Sri Lanka, agreeing to focus on generating more jobs. The ILO says that in 2004 world production increased by nearly US$ 4 trillion but unemployment was reduced by only 500,000.
To face what it calls "the global jobs crisis" the ILO allocated US$ 594.31 million for the year 2006-07 to develop programmes that would address decent employment generation in its member countries.
Decent work for young people is one of the main issues that the funds will address.
The ILO says that Africa and South Asia will see the greatest number of young people looking for work over the next 10 years.
"Between 2003 and 2015, the growth in the number of young people looking for a job will be greatest in sub-Saharan Africa (28 per cent) and South Asia (15 percent)," says the ILO.
