June 12, 2007 (LBO) – A blast ripped through a vital high voltage electricity transmission line in a suburb of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, but it failed to disrupt power supplies, officials and police said. It was not known who carried out the latest attack, but Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger guerillas had earlier bombed a petroleum depot and a gas storage facility in a night air raid. The blast at about 7.00 am local time had been set off under a tower carrying a 220,000 volt transmission line of the Ceylon Electricity Board's high tension grid network.
The line takes power from an important thermal generation complex for distribution to the rest of the island.
The explosion had occurred at the foot of steel pylon on the transmission line from the Kelanitissa thermal generating complex to Biyagama, but power supply had not been disrupted as the transmission line was still intact.
