The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union is threatening to plunge the country into darkness if the government fails to find sustainable solutions to reduce power prices in the country. The engineers say they are taking trade union action to protest government inaction over the last 22 years.

Unlike the doctors, engineers working for the power monopoly the CEB rarely keep their consumers in the dark because of trade union action.
CEB engineers only struck work once in 1996. Even then, it wasn't for a pay hike.
The CEB Engineers' Union is on the war path now demanding the government to start work immediately on the Upper Kotmale and Norochcholai power plants.
"Our idea is not to take trade union action and shut down the power system. We want to activate the project. It is our responsibility to inform the public.
We will take whatever measures for that," Ananda Piyatilake, President, CEB Engineers' Union told LBR.
