A day ahead of crucial talks with Ceypetco unions, government officials say that plans for a third player to foster competition will have to go ahead. "We can enhance the levels of competition with a third player coming in. We have had a history of union strikes but it will be considered if it is in the larger national interest," Head of Strategic Enterprise Management Agency (SEMA), Mano Tittawella said Monday.



Last Thursday, over 5,000 Ceypetco employees staged a walkout on fears of an impending deal with India's Bharat Petroleum as third player in retail petroleum.


Unions argued that the government was selling of state assets through a one third management stake in a common infrastructure facility to be offered to the new player.

Public Enterprise Reform Commission (PERC) officials say talks are at least a month off, but unions suspended the strike until a meeting with the President on Tuesday.
