Sri Lanka stocks close up 1.3-pct

Dec 22, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lankan stocks closed higher after several days of losses albeit in thin turnover as most investors kept away as is usual towards the year-end, brokers said.

The main All Share Price Index rose 1.31 percent (76.52 points) to 5,919.35, while the more liquid Milanka index rose 1.56 percent (79.56 points) to 5,167.81.

Turnover was a low 349 million rupees, according to stock exchange provisional figures. There were no crossings.

Sri Lanka Telecom gained 1.70 rupees to close at 46, Hatton National Bank went up six rupees to end at 150 and index heavyweight John Keells Holdings rose two to close at 172 rupees.

Trades in Commercial Bank accounted for the biggest turnover with the share closing at 100 rupees, up 80 cents.

Samson International was the highest gainer of the day, ending up 14.90 rupees at 126.90 followed by Asiri Central Hospitals which gained 23.40 rupees to end at 203.80.

Janashakthi Insurance Company was the most actively traded stock, and accounted for the second highest turnover, closing at 15.


20 rupees, up 80 cents, with 1.58 million shares changing hands.

HVA Foods was also actively traded, closing at 35.80 rupees, up 1.70, with 456,300 shares done.
