Sri Lanka foreigners to pluck more tea for Guinness Record

Aug 25, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will aim for a Guinness Record this week by having 3,000 kilograms of tea plucked with the help of 200 foreigners before serving 35,000 cups of tea at the Esala Perahera procession, tourism promotion office said.

The event at Pedro Estate in the Central Province hill country of Nuwara Eliya will be organized by Sri Lanka Tourism, the Tea Board and Sri Lankan Airlines, backed by, Basilur tea, a tea manufacturer.





The tourism promotion office said invitees and foreign guests from India, China, UK, Germany, Italy, Russia, Middle East, Australia, Scandinavia and United States will take part in the event.

“In the unique partnership between the key agencies that take Sri Lanka to the world, tourism, tea and Sri Lankan will spruce the current $61 billion dollar nation brand to achieve the targeted $80 billion dollars,” Rohantha Athukorala, chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau, said. “Sri Lanka Tourism will cross three billion dollar in net receipts in 2015 and the new advertising campaign will help Sri Lanka's positioning.



The proposition of DNA - diversity, compactness and authencity - will help the overall objective of attracting 250 dollar tourists rather than just going after arrivals.

” He said the promotion office plans to extend the Guinness Record to the world by way of the 'Ceylon Tea Boutique' concept which will be exhibited in every exhibition that Sri Lanka tourism takes part in. Sri Lanka had over a million tourists in the first seven months of this year at a growth of 16.8 percent. July itself rose 31.2 percent with China becoming the top source of arrivals.
