“When you do tax reforms, there are lots of political pressures coming up asking various tax exemptions for this area and that area,” “Actually it is very difficult to broad base the tax system with that kind of policy. You should have firm policy and should stick to it,” Deputy Governor was speaking at a seminar on post war Sri Lanka organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce last evening. Sri Lanka needs to simplify the tax system further and strengthen the tax administration to improve revenue collection.

Stupid central bank policy. We do not need to broaden tax base. There should only be few taxes. The government is taxing everything and anything is a stupid policy. There should only be VAT, Income tax, Corporate tax that is it . It would boost business and improve tax revenue. By increasing tax base people will dodge taxes. Tax revenue will decline. Tax collection will cost more than tax revenue. We also need fixed rate of taxes and not variable rate for each and every product.

Rather than collecting more taxes it is best to safeguard what is being collected.
a)Fraudes with regards to overpayments when it comes to capital expenditures like roads, and recurrent expenditures like expenses on various(opening ceromonies ect.ect).Loss of revenue @collection pointoints ie. Leasing of govt resources, mining lands, losses @ collection ponts (ieVAT scam, excise duty variancies).Whilst proposals are sound first things first may be a better option.
