Ravi challenges MR again, asks for debate

June 18, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake challenged former Finance Minister and President Mahinda Rajapakse again to come for a debate on the national economy and financial policies.











“I challenged former President Mahinda Rajapakse to debate to talk about the economy and what they did to the country at a public forum rather than him blaming us at meeting at temples,” Karunanayake said.

“I am even ready to come to your home and talk if required,” “But if you feel scared, you can have Bandula Gunawardane (member of the Parliament) besides you.” He said, the country is suffering due to the past mistakes made by the former government borrowing debt at higher interest rates which is ultimately paid by the tax papers or the citizens of the country. “There were alot of promises made in the former government's budget last year but they has not allocated sufficient funds for those,” Karunanayake said.











“We had to take this economy in a situation like that, we are suffering because of former regime’s sins.

” Pointing out the data, Karunanayke says the total debt of the country was increased to 8,899 billion rupees in 2014 from 1784 billion rupees in 2005, and the per capita debt has also increase to about 427,220 rupees for the last year. “We are borrowing money at a lower interest rate with a longer pay back period to pay these debts,” “We didn’t print money.”
