From January data volumes on all broadband packages had been increased.
SLT provides broadband services through ADSL (assymetrical-digital-subscriber-lines), fibre to home and now through 4G LTE (fourth generation long term evolution) wireless technology.
At Ruwanwella, in Sri Lanka's Kegalle district the firm said it had given a gratis broadband connections to the public library and school which had demonstrated downlink speeds of 50 Megabits per second.
"…[T]hese developments will not be limited to Kegalle district, but will be expanded into other areas as well in the future," Sri Lanka's telecom minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was quoted as saying following the demonstration.
The 4G LTE expansion to Kegalle comes ahead of a state sponsored exhibition to be held in the district next month.
"Availability of Telecommunication and IT services to all Sri Lankans is essential to achieve the knowledge centred developments," Sri Lanka's telecom regulator Anusha Palpita said.
"Enhancements and improvements in Telecommunications sector will be the key to achieve expected socio-economic developments in the country in the years to come.
"
An SLT official said the technology has already been deployed in multiple locations which are not served by its wired broadband network, expanding 4G coverage.
SLT chief executive Lalith De Silva said expanding the broadband footprint will ultimately help raise living standards of all Sri Lankans.
From January 2014 SLT had increased data volumes in all its broadband packages with no price change.
