Sri Lanka to reduce its carbon foot print in energy production by switching to gas

June 11, 2015 (LBO) – Power and Energy Minister says Sri Lanka will stop using fuel based power plants and convert to natural gas in future to reduce the Island’s carbon foot print.







“We have recently retired; high pollution and high cost fuel based power stations totaling 220MW,” “And are in the process of switching another 655 MW of existing plants into gas and reduce our carbon foot print.” Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka said.





“We’re in the process of scaling down our prospects on coal power beyond 2020 and taken a decision that no more coal plants after Sampur,” “Our long term goal is to achieve a green energy-based green economy beyond 2030.” Ranawaka said. He was addressing a forum on solutions to climate change organized by the Embassy of France in partnership with the French Development Agency and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Wednesday.







The Minister also said that their next objective is to ensure better service and customer satisfaction since the Ministry is now close to achieving 100 percent electrification in the island. “The next step is to improve the quality of service.







We’re going to have performance and safety standards in the power sector,” “In this regard it is necessary to develop procurement and safety standards.” Ranawaka further said.
