Sri Lankan citizens who could not afford a car were buying up to 24,000 two-wheelers a month up to April 2011 when the state almost doubled taxes, in a mistaken reaction to balance of payments trouble, which is a problem related to monetary policy and credit.
Two-wheeler sales then came down to between 14,000 to 12,000 units a month.
"We find that around 28 percent to 30 percent of the market are scooters and there has been a growth in the scooters," Nalin Welgama, from Ideal Motors said.
"It is not only in Sri Lanka but also in India.
"
The Ideal Motors launched the Rodeo RZ and Duro DZ scooters and the Pantero and Centuro motorcycle units.
Welgama said Mandra's 125 cubic centimeter engine scooters which was the first in its class had become popular in India.
