Aug 16, 2012 (LBO) – British airways will resume flights to Sri Lanka in March 2013 after a fifteen year absence in the island, the airline said in a statement. Visitors from Western Europe to the island rose 22 percent to 41,584 with UK generating most tourists at 13,643 up 13.7 percent from a year earlier.

In the first seven months of 2012, UK was the second largest source of tourists to Sri Lanka at 61,618 up 5 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.

British Airways suspended flights to Colombo in the late 1990s owing to the security situation at the time in Sri Lanka. British airways will fly passengers from UK's Gatwick airport to Colombo's Bandaranaike international airport via Male in the Maldives.

The carrier will operate a Boeing 777, a long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliner with three cabins on a thrice-a-week flight schedule to Colombo, the airline said.
