Feb 02, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's southern expressway linking the capital Colombo with the south is to be extended to link the eastern port town of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka Ports Authority chairman Priyath Wickrama said. The move is part of a plan to improve the transport infrastructure to give manufacturers fast connectivity, he told a tea convention in Colombo.

"Manufacturers expect fast connectivity. In the next 10 years you will see many expressways connecting various parts of the country," Wickrama said.

The southern expressway now links Colombo with the southern town of Galle and is later to be extended to Hambantota, where a deep-water port is being built.

The government now plans to extend the expressway further all the way to Trincomalee, Wickrama said.

"Shipping of tea is mostly done in containers and improvement of port terminals and facilities will minimise the cost of transport and time and improve exporter competitiveness," he said.

"The upgrading and expansion of container terminals will expedite cargo clearances. We'll be having bonded warehousing where blending, mixing and other value addition services are available for the tea sector."
