Port Forum

Aug 04, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is to host an annual meeting of the international ports association alongside an air freight and shipping exhibition to promote the island as a logistics hub after the end of a war. "South Asia including Sri Lanka is expected to increase container throughput at a faster speed than the global average. "The International Association of Ports & Harbors has selected Sri Lanka as the host country for their 12th Asia - Oceania regional forum and meeting," Rohitha Abegunawardhane, deputy minister of port and highways told a news conference.

"This is the first time an international event of this nature is to be held in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has been able to convince the IAPH and won the bid to hold the conference." The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) meeting is to be held in Colombo during March 8-9, 2012.

The number of international events being held on the island has been increasing after the end of its 30-year ethnic war in May 2009 during which business conditions were difficult with foreign buyers reluctant to visit suppliers.

The IAPH has a membership of over 200 ports in 90 countries handling nearly 80 percent of world container
