July 08, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka plans to create an extra berth for feeder vessels at Colombo port to accommodate growing cargo flows that threatens to choke the harbour as it nears capacity, an official said.

Wickrama said Colombo port lacked the space to expand and was trying to accommodate increasing volumes of cargo with more efficiency until a new deep-water port being built next to the existing harbour is ready. Sri Lanka Ports Authority chairman Priyath Wickrama said the move was one of several planned by the SLPA to make maximum use of existing infrastructure to cope with increasing cargo volumes.

A berth built 10 years ago but not used as it lacked connectivity with the main Jaya Container Terminal is to be commissioned by September, he told an economic summit organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the island biggest business chamber.

The SLPA is planning to connect the berth by road and equip it with cranes to load and unload cargo from feeder vessels which feed cargo to Colombo from ports in the sub-continent for transhipment by main line vessels.
