Feb 09, 2011 (LBO) - Container volumes at Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) terminals in Colombo port hit a new monthly record of 205,539, up 24 percent from a year ago, a statement said. Colombo port handled four million containers in 2010. The volumes exceeded the previous monthly high of 201,212 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) achieved in August 2010, the SLPA statement said.

Cargo volumes at the port have been on the rise in recent months as transhipment and domestic trade recovers from a slump.

The statement said Colombo port has also improved navigation and cargo handling efficiency with computerized terminal operations and renovated infrastructure.

The total containers handled by the port of Colombo, including the private South Asia Gateway Terminals, for January 2011 rose 11.8 percent to 366,971 TEUs from the year before.
