The new vessels to be ordered are bigger, being capable of carrying 400 passengers and 250 tonnes of cargo. Jitendra Kumar Dadoo, the Administrator of the Union Territories of Lakshadweep, India, said the vessels were needed to transport people between the islands and the mainland.

"We need all-weather ships to enable large number of islanders to move quickly to the mainland," he told a news conference after the flagging off last week of 'Lakshadweep Sea', which can carry 250 passengers and 100 tonnes of cargo.

It was the second passenger vessel build by the yard for the Lakshadweep islands, her sister vessel, Arabian Sea being delivered in January 2010.

The vessels operate between the Indian mainland ports like Kochi and the Lakshadweep island, as well as in the inter-island routes.

Dadoo said the first passenger vessel delivered by Colombo Dockyard, a unit of Japan's Onomichi Dockyard, was serving well.
