Sept 07, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Customs department has doubled the number of gates at Colombo port to four to ease congestion and speed up the flow of cargo, a Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) official said.

Truckers have had to wait for lengthy periods to move in and out of the port because of the congestion. Priyath Wickrama, chairman of SLPA, said port security red tape had also been reduced in order to minimise delays to shippers.

"We've minimised congestion at the gates," he said. "There were two terminals operated by Customs. The Customs have now opened four gates throughout the day.

Shippers and other customers of Colombo port have been complaining of delays at the harbour with aging equipment and outdated red tape unable to cope with a surge in cargo volumes as trade recovers from recession.
